What is CBD oil? Uses and benefits of CBD and cannabinoids

Useful information about what is CBD oil

CBD is one of over 60 cannabinoids that can be extracted from the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids are organic, but insoluble in water and at an average temperature. CBD used to produce the known oil can be found in different forms, such as liquid, cream and also chewing products.

The most famous active principle – and the psychoactive one – in cannabis is THC, tetrahydrocannabinol. CBD is not a psychoactive drug, contrary to THC. Industrial hemp has higher levels of CBD, with lower THC contents, while marijuana has higher levels of THC and lower levels of CBD.

Uses and benefits of CBD

CBD is famous for its ability to stimulate our nervous system. The cannabinoid receptor we can find in the body are mainly two, CB1 and CB2, and CBD oil has been proved to positively interact with them to better our physiological functions. CBD oil contains high levels of cannabidiol, higher than those found in marijuana and, even if these levels seem small, take into account that they will still be sufficient to produce the desired effects. Many people wonder if the CBD can offer benefits even to those already in good health. The answer is that each one of us responds differently, and each person has different goals for what concerns personal well-being. There are no official medical statements on this and, according to the official guidelines, CBD oils are considered a natural supplement.

Cannabis and endocannabinoid system

These terms may sound very similar, at first. The reason is that cannabinoids in Cannabis are extremely similar to those present and naturally produced by the human body. “Endo” is an abbreviation of endogenous, meaning “that happens from within”: this means that Cannabis cannabinoids interact with Endocannabinoids, or cannabinoids that are naturally produced by humans.

Research on CBD oil

Studies and research on the various therapeutic properties of CBD are still ongoing. The disorders and diseases that can afflict the human body are innumerable and CBD could improve the symptoms of patients who suffer from them. In 2003, the US Federal Government’s Health and Human Services Department allowed a patient to treat a number of inflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders with CBD. CBD was recently approved by the FDA and included as a product for medical experimentation. This type of experimentation is mainly aimed at children suffering from a rare form of epilepsy. However, it must be kept in mind that US federal law still prevents the issue of official statements regarding the effectiveness of CBD. CBD that can be found on the market – it can be purchased online too- is a product classified for personal care or as a natural supplement. However, the research begins to take on certain importance and the focus is constantly on the properties of CBD oil.

Why is the cultivation of hemp allowed to extract CBD but not marijuana?

As already stressed, hemp has high CBD and lower THC levels, in contrast to marijuana. Industrial hemp is Cannabis of the Sativa type. There are several advanced plant genetics and techniques of selection and cultivation oriented precisely to greater production of CBD, a component that can also be produced by a hemp plant. Hemp can be grown legally, and the resulting oil can be imported. The advantages of using hemp are innumerable and superior compared to those deriving from the use of marijuana.
